In August 2021, a large amount of money – consisting of cash and checks – was found hidden inside a wall of Joel Osteen's Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas. The discovery was made by a plumber who was called to fix a loose toilet in the building. According to reports, several envelopes with cash and checks were found hidden inside the wall behind the toilet. It is believed that the hidden money is connected to a 2014 theft incident, when thieves stole approximately $600,000 worth of cash, checks, and credit card information from the church. Although an investigation was launched at the time, the stolen money was never recovered until the plumber's 2021 discovery.
