Bill Belichick is the son of Steve Belichick, an assistant football coach with a long-standing legacy at the U.S. Naval Academy, and Jeannette Belichick. His early exposure to football through his father laid the foundation for his interest in coaching. He graduated with a degree in economics from Wesleyan University, where he also played football and lacrosse.
Belichick began his professional coaching career in 1975 as a special assistant for the Baltimore Colts. His subsequent roles included assistant special teams coach and wide receivers coach for the Detroit Lions (1976–1977), assistant special teams coach and defensive assistant for the Denver Broncos (1978), and a variety of coaching roles with the New York Giants (1979–1990), including defensive coordinator.
He served as the head coach for the Cleveland Browns from 1991 to 1995 before joining the Patriots in 1996 as assistant head coach and secondary coach. His stint with the New York Jets (1997–1999) included roles as assistant head coach and defensive backs coach, and briefly, head coach. He became the Patriots’ head coach in 2000, a position he still holds.
Two major figures notably influenced Belichick’s football philosophy: his father, Steve Belichick, and veteran coach Bill Parcells. Under Parcells, Belichick served as a top assistant with teams like the New York Giants, New England Patriots, and New York Jets, winning two Super Bowls during his Giants years. His coaching tree is substantial—seven of his assistant coaches have become NFL head coaches, while others have gone on to lead NCAA Division I programs or become senior NFL executives.
Belichick is widely regarded as one of the greatest NFL coaches of all time. He holds the record for the most playoff coaching wins in NFL history and ranks among the top five in regular season wins. He has led the Patriots to six Super Bowl victories since becoming head coach—more than any other head coach in NFL history.
Known for his laconic media interactions and emphasis on strategic preparation, Belichick is both respected and criticized for his intensely competitive nature. He has remained a controversial figure due to events like the videotaping scandal (Spygate) and his sometimes confrontational demeanor with the press. He spends time studying military strategies, including those of the U.S. Navy, and analyzing other football programs to gain insights.
