Alyson Stoner is an American actress, singer, and dancer, best known for her roles in Cheaper by the Dozen, the Step Up film franchise, and her appearance in Missy Elliott’s iconic “Work It” music video.
Alyson Rae Stoner was born on August 11, 1993, in Toledo, Ohio, to LuAnne Hodges, a former secretary at Owens-Illinois, and Charlie Stoner. She has two sisters, Correy and Jaimee Stoner. While growing up in Toledo, she attended Maumee Valley Country Day School and trained in ballet, tap, and jazz dance at O’Connell’s Dance Studio. She also studied modeling at the Margaret O'Brien Modeling Studio, where she later began her early career.
Stoner began her professional career at a young age. In 2000, she was named Best Model of the Year at the International Modeling and Talent Association Convention in New York City representing the Margaret O’Brien Modeling Studio. Within a year, she was cast as co-host of Disney Channel’s Super Short Show, alongside Michael Alan Johnson, marking her television debut.
Her breakout film role came when she played Sarah, one of the children, in the family comedies Cheaper by the Dozen (2003) and Cheaper by the Dozen 2 (2005). Around the same time, she made guest appearances on popular children’s television shows such as The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, That’s So Raven, and Drake & Josh.
In addition to her live-action roles, Stoner has an extensive voice acting resume. She voiced Isabella Garcia-Shapiro and Jenny in the popular animated show Phineas and Ferb. Contrary to earlier reports, there is no record of her voicing a character named Mrs. Hanson in "Mew Power," which appears to be a factual inaccuracy. Her voice acting has been a vital component of her career in entertainment.
In 2011, she ventured into music with the release of her debut EP, Beat the System. That same year, she began teaching hip hop classes at Millennium Dance Complex in Los Angeles. As a multifaceted artist, she also worked as a dance editor for KEWL Magazine, contributing insights into the dance and teen entertainment scene.
In 2006, Stoner joined the Step Up franchise as Camille, the younger sister of Channing Tatum’s character. Her role and dance performance in the film helped solidify her reputation as a skilled dancer in Hollywood. She reprised this role in later installments of the franchise.
Stoner’s visibility surged once again in 2019 during the MTV Video Music Awards, when Missy Elliott was honored with the Video Vanguard Award. As part of the tribute performance, Elliott invited Stoner onstage to join a high-energy medley of her greatest hits. Stoner’s appearance went viral, as fans recognized her from Elliott’s 2002 “Work It” music video. Her dance skills and enduring connection to pop culture left a strong impression on both social media and entertainment outlets.
In 2009, Stoner was briefly in a relationship with actor Vincent Martella. The relationship lasted for a little over a year before the couple amicably parted ways in 2010. As of now, Stoner has kept her personal life relatively private and has not publicly confirmed any current romantic relationships or having children.
Alyson Stoner has built a multi-dimensional career as an actress, voice performer, dancer, and recording artist. Her early beginnings in child television and film evolved into a sustained career that includes critically recognized dance performances and music ventures. Through her teaching, writing, and ongoing creative output, she continues to influence new generations of performers across entertainment disciplines.
