Annaleigh Ashford is an American actress, singer, and dancer, best known for her acclaimed performances in Broadway productions such as Glinda in Wicked, Margot in Legally Blonde, and Lauren in Kinky Boots.
Annaleigh Amanda Ashford was born on June 25, 1985, in Denver, Colorado, to Holli Swanson and Chris Swanson. Her mother was a physical education teacher at an elementary school, while her father was a small business owner. Ashford showed an early interest in athletics, participating in Kids Cross Country events. At the age of six, following a 400-meter dash coached by her mother, it became apparent that her talents might lie elsewhere. As a result, her mother enrolled her in a local dance studio, marking the beginning of her performance journey.
Ashford demonstrated academic and artistic drive from a young age. She graduated from Wheat Ridge High School at just 16 years old. Following her early high school graduation, she enrolled at Marymount Manhattan College in New York City, completing a degree in theater by the time she was 19.
Ashford’s performing career began early. At the age of nine, she landed the role of Tina Denmark in a Denver production of Ruthless!. By 14, she had already gained recognition in her home state, being named 'The Teen to Watch' by the Rocky Mountain News.
In 2005, she played a pivotal role in the musical Feeling Electric—a workshop version of what would become Next to Normal—by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey. That same year, she joined actor Anthony Rapp in a performance at the New York Film Festival. From December 2005 through September 2006, she toured with the First National Tour of Wicked as Pfannee and understudy for Glinda; she later played Glinda on Broadway from October 2007 to May 2008 and in Chicago from June 2008 until that production closed in January 2009. In 2007, she originated the role of Margot in Legally Blonde, her Broadway debut, and was cast as Brenda Strong in the developing musical adaptation of Catch Me If You Can.
Expanding her talents beyond acting, Ashford made her directorial debut in September 2010 at Birdland Jazz Club, directing Jay Armstrong Johnson’s solo performance debut. In 2013, she voiced a minor character in Disney’s animated mega-hit Frozen. In film, she appeared in the 2018 romantic comedy Second Act, starring Jennifer Lopez, and was subsequently cast in the independent musical film American Reject.
Ashford received a Tony Award nomination in 2013 for playing Lauren in Kinky Boots and won the 2015 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play as Essie Carmichael in You Can't Take It with You. In 2023, she earned her third Tony nomination for playing Mrs. Lovett opposite Josh Groban in the Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd.
Annaleigh Ashford continued to transition into prominent television roles. She played Betty DiMello in Showtime’s Masters of Sex, starred as Gina Dabrowski in the CBS sitcom B Positive (2020–2022), portrayed Paula Jones in Impeachment: American Crime Story (2021), and earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for Welcome to Chippendales (2022). In 2019, she appeared in the Netflix limited series Unbelievable, which critically explored themes of trauma and justice. While she had a supporting part and not a leading role, her character, named Lilly, contributed to the series’ emotional landscape. Throughout her career, Ashford has demonstrated a range that spans musical theater, comedy, and drama, earning her esteem in stage and screen circles alike.
Annaleigh Ashford married actor Joe Tapper on July 29, 2013. The couple welcomed their first child, a son named Jack Clark Tapper, on September 8, 2016, and their second child, a daughter named Lucy Jean Tapper, on October 8, 2024. Outside of her work, Ashford has often spoken about her commitment to balancing her professional endeavors with family life.
