Benjamin "Bibi" Netanyahu (born 21 October 1949) is an Israeli politician and the current Prime Minister of Israel. He also serves as a member of the Knesset, Chairman of the Likud party, and Minister of Public Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs. Born in Tel Aviv to secular Jewish parents, Netanyahu is notable for being the first Israeli prime minister born in Israel after its establishment in 1948.
Netanyahu enlisted in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) during the Six-Day War in 1967. He served as a team leader in the elite Sayeret Matkal special forces unit. During his military career, he participated in several critical missions, including Operation Inferno (1968), Operation Gift (1968), and Operation Isotope (1972), during which he sustained a shoulder injury. He also fought on the front lines during the War of Attrition and the Yom Kippur War in 1973, conducting special operations along the Suez Canal and in Syrian territory. Netanyahu was wounded in combat twice and achieved the rank of captain before his discharge.
From 1984 to 1988, Netanyahu served as Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations. A member of the Likud party, he was first elected as Prime Minister of Israel in June 1996, serving until July 1999. Following his defeat by Ehud Barak in the 1999 election, Netanyahu temporarily stepped away from politics and worked in the private sector.
Netanyahu returned to political life in 2002, taking on the role of Foreign Affairs Minister (2002–2003) and then Finance Minister (2003–2005) in the government led by Ariel Sharon. He later resigned in opposition to Sharon’s Gaza disengagement plan. After Sharon formed the Kadima party in late 2005, Netanyahu reclaimed the leadership of Likud in December of that year.
The 2006 election proved challenging for Likud, which secured only 12 seats. Nonetheless, in December 2006, Netanyahu became the official Leader of the Opposition and remained Chairman of the Likud party. He successfully defended his leadership in the 2007 party primaries, defeating Moshe Feiglin.
Following the 2009 parliamentary elections, where Likud came in second but right-wing parties collectively secured a majority, Netanyahu formed a coalition government and returned as Prime Minister. After the 2013 elections, he became only the second person, after David Ben-Gurion, to be elected to the prime ministership for a third term.
In 2012, Forbes magazine ranked Netanyahu 23rd on its annual list of "The World's Most Powerful People." The same year, and again in 2010, The Jerusalem Post ranked him first on its list of the "Most Influential Jews in the World." In 2014, he was ranked third on that list, reflecting his enduring prominence in global and Jewish affairs.
