Brett Young is an American country pop singer and songwriter, born on March 23, 1981, in Anaheim, California. He attended Calvary Chapel High School in Costa Mesa, where he excelled both academically and athletically. Following high school, Young pursued higher education at several institutions, including Irvine Valley College and California State University, Fresno. Notably, he initially accepted a baseball scholarship to the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) in 1999.
Before pursuing music professionally, Young was a standout baseball player. As a high school pitcher, he helped lead his team to a CIF championship, earning attention from Major League Baseball scouts. He received a full athletic scholarship to Ole Miss and reportedly turned down pre-draft opportunities from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and the Minnesota Twins. Unfortunately, his promising baseball career came to an early end in 2003 due to an elbow injury.
Young's transition from sports to music began after he was inspired by Gavin DeGraw’s album Chariot. Encouraged by the emotional depth of DeGraw's music, Young began writing his own songs and returning to his musical roots, which started in high school when he substituted for an absent band leader during a Christian worship session. This marked the beginning of a new career path.
Driven by personal passion, Young wrote six songs that eventually formed the foundation of his debut self-titled album, released in 2016 under the Republic Nashville label. His music blends country with pop influences, establishing him as a prominent figure in the contemporary country music scene. The success of his early singles helped solidify his reputation as a rising star in country pop music.
On November 3, 2018, Brett Young married Taylor Mills, his longtime girlfriend of 10 years. The couple has spoken publicly about their desire to build a family together, reflecting the personal depth that often informs Young’s songwriting.
