Carlos Hyde was born on September 20, 1990, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He began his football journey at Princeton High School in Cincinnati but transferred after his freshman year to Naples High School in Naples, Florida. At Naples, Hyde excelled in both football and basketball, showcasing his versatility as an athlete. During his senior season, he was recognized as Player of the Year by both the Naples Daily News and the Fort Myers News-Press. In 2007, he played a key role in helping Naples High School win the Florida state championship.
Hyde received multiple scholarship offers from prominent college football programs, including Florida, Miami (FL), and Florida State. Although he had a strong desire to play for Ohio State, academic requirements initially delayed his entry. He spent the fall semester of 2009 at Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia before enrolling at Ohio State University in 2010.
Hyde joined the Ohio State Buckeyes football team in 2010 and began his collegiate career as a backup running back. In his junior season, he appeared in 10 games, missing two due to an ankle injury. He looked forward to his senior season in 2013, but it began with a suspension for the first three games due to his involvement in an off-field incident at a local bar. Although no criminal charges were filed, the suspension temporarily sidelined his progress.
Upon his return, Hyde delivered a standout performance in the remaining eight games of the season. His accomplishments earned him First-Team All-Big Ten honors as well as a spot on the Associated Press Third-Team All-American list. Over his college career, Hyde became known for his physical toughness and strong downhill running style—traits that positioned him as one of the top running backs in his draft class.
Hyde was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Known for his powerful build and explosive running style, Hyde entered the NFL with high expectations. Early in the 2014 season, injuries to veteran running backs opened up opportunities for him to secure the No. 2 spot on the depth chart. He demonstrated an impressive ability to gain extra yards after contact, especially in short-yardage and goal-line situations.
By the 2015 season, Hyde was named the 49ers' starting running back. He began the season strongly but was placed on injured reserve with a foot injury on December 12, curtailing his momentum. Despite setbacks, Hyde continued to show promise, particularly in adapting to NFL-level play and learning the complexities of the position.
While Hyde has exhibited significant potential, he continues to work on refining his skills and maintaining optimal physical condition. Nutrition and consistent fitness remain key areas of focus, as maintaining a stable weight is crucial to his on-field performance. Observers have noted the importance of durability and versatility in his continued development as an NFL running back.
