Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah is an American jazz trumpeter, composer, and producer. Renowned for pushing the boundaries of jazz, he is a two-time Edison Award winner and a Grammy Award nominee. He is also the nephew of acclaimed jazz saxophonist Donald Harrison Jr.
Christian Scott was born as Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah on March 31, 1983, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He began his musical journey at age 13 under the guidance of his uncle, Donald Harrison Jr., a prominent saxophonist recognized for his innovation in modern jazz and for mentoring young musicians.
Scott graduated from the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts in 2001. He then received a full-tuition scholarship to the Berklee College of Music, where he completed a degree in professional music and film scoring in just 30 months—a testament to his talent and discipline.
Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah launched his professional music career in 2002. Since then, he has released eleven critically acclaimed studio albums, two well-received live recordings, and one greatest hits compilation. His innovative contributions have expanded the jazz genre, particularly through his development of a harmonic concept known as the “forecasting cell.”
In addition, Scott is recognized for his distinctive "un-voiced tone" on the trumpet—a stylistic choice that sets his sound apart from traditional jazz performers. He frequently blends musical styles, integrating elements of hip-hop, rock, and Afro-Caribbean rhythms to create what he has termed "Stretch Music," a genre-defying approach that reimagines the boundaries of contemporary jazz.
Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah has received global recognition for his artistry. Among his most notable accolades are two Edison Awards, one of Europe’s oldest music honors, which underscores his international influence. His work has also earned him a Grammy Award nomination, further affirming his status as a leading voice in progressive jazz.
Scott's musical vision has been deeply influenced by his family heritage, particularly through his relationship with Donald Harrison Jr., who played a critical role in shaping his early development. Through both his recordings and live performances, Scott continues to honor his New Orleans roots while challenging the traditions of jazz, adding layers of cultural and sonic depth to his compositions.
