Cody Bellinger is an American professional baseball player who plays as a first baseman and outfielder. He gained national recognition after being named the National League Rookie of the Year in 2017 while playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball (MLB).

Background and Early Life

Cody James Bellinger was born on July 13, 1995, in Scottsdale, Arizona. He is the middle child of Jennifer and Clay Bellinger. His father, Clay, is a former MLB player who won two World Series championships (1999 and 2000) during his time with the New York Yankees from 1999 to 2001. Following his tenure with the Yankees, Clay played briefly for the Anaheim Angels in 2002. After retiring from professional baseball, Clay transitioned into work as a volunteer firefighter and became involved in real estate.

Cody graduated from Hamilton High School in Chandler, Arizona, where he excelled in baseball from an early age. He has an older sister and a younger brother, Cole Bellinger, a former pitcher who was drafted by the San Diego Padres in 2017 and retired in 2021.

MLB Career and Achievements

Bellinger made his MLB debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers in April 2017. That same year, he hit 39 home runs, setting a new National League record for home runs by a rookie (since broken by Pete Alonso in 2019), earning him the NL Rookie of the Year award and an All-Star selection. Known for his strong fielding skills and powerful left-handed hitting, he plays both first base and outfield positions effectively. He also throws left-handed, making him a versatile asset for any team.

As of the end of the 2018 MLB season, Bellinger had compiled a batting average of .263, with 64 home runs and 173 RBIs. His value to his team extends beyond statistics, as he is also known for his defensive agility and competitive spirit.

In 2019, Bellinger won the NL Most Valuable Player award, along with a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger, and in 2020 he won the World Series with the Dodgers. After the Dodgers non-tendered him following the 2022 season, he signed with the Chicago Cubs, where he won the 2023 NL Comeback Player of the Year award and a second Silver Slugger. He re-signed with the Cubs in 2024 and was traded to the New York Yankees that December. In January 2026, he re-signed with the Yankees on a five-year, $162.5 million contract, and in July 2026 he was named MVP of the All-Star Game.

Viral Moments and Fan Interactions

In June 2019, Bellinger made headlines off the field when fans ran onto the field attempting to embrace him in consecutive games, first at Dodger Stadium against the Colorado Rockies and then at Chase Field in Phoenix. Although the moment was lighthearted for spectators, Bellinger expressed concern over the trend, stating that while he enjoys connecting with fans, safety and game focus must come first.

Relationship and Personal Life

Cody Bellinger is married to model Chase Carter. The couple went public with their relationship in 2020 and have two daughters, born in 2021 and 2023.
