DaBaby is an American rapper and songwriter widely recognized for his breakout single "Suge."
Jonathan Lyndale Kirk, professionally known as DaBaby, was born on December 22, 1991, in Cleveland, Ohio. At the age of six, he moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, where he spent much of his childhood. Though his early years included involvement in street culture, by 2014 he shifted his focus to music. Adopting the stage name Baby Jesus, he released his debut mixtape, NonFiction, later that year. This marked the beginning of his full-time commitment to music, despite having had no formal experience in the industry at the time.
In 2015, he began gaining attention by releasing several mixtapes under the name Baby Jesus. Later, to avoid potential controversy, he changed his stage moniker to DaBaby. He explained this transition in tracks like "DaBaby (Intro)," which appeared on his 2016 release God’s Work Resurrected. That mixtape included a feature by Boosie Badazz and helped him gain early industry and fan recognition.
Between 2016 and 2017, DaBaby built a strong grassroots following by releasing a flurry of mixtapes, including Light Show, Billion Dollar Baby, and a series titled Baby Talk (volumes 1 through 4). His performances at the South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival in 2015 and 2017 further elevated his profile.
DaBaby became known for his energetic and charismatic live performances. His musical style evolved to feature increasingly aggressive delivery and confident lyrical flow. By 2018’s Blank mixtape, his sound had become more refined, setting the stage for mainstream success. His national breakthrough came in 2019 with the release of his debut studio album Baby on Baby, which included the chart-topping single "Suge." That same year, he signed a major record deal with Interscope Records.
DaBaby is a father to two children—a son and a daughter. However, he has chosen to keep details regarding the children's mother and other aspects of his private life away from the public eye.
In November 2018, while shopping at a Walmart in Huntersville, North Carolina, DaBaby was involved in a fatal altercation after he was approached by a group of individuals. The incident resulted in the death of 19-year-old Jalyn Domonique Craig. DaBaby admitted to being in the altercation but maintained that he did not fire the fatal shot. He was not charged with any offense related to the shooting after authorities determined he acted in self-defense.
DaBaby's growing popularity also earned him invitations to major music festivals. Notably, he performed at the Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival in Los Angeles in November 2019. The event gained media traction when a surprise appearance by Drake led to an unexpected reaction from the crowd. However, DaBaby’s own performance was well received and added to his rising status in the music industry.
