DeMarco Murray is a former professional American football player best known for his time as a running back in the National Football League (NFL). Born on February 12, 1988, in Las Vegas, Nevada, Murray played for several teams during his career, including the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, and Tennessee Titans.
Murray attended Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he excelled as a multi-sport athlete, participating in football, baseball, and track. However, football was where he made his mark. He was named All-Conference three consecutive years and helped lead his team to three straight conference championships.
During his senior year, Murray rushed for 1,947 yards and scored 27 touchdowns, while also recording 22 receptions for 624 yards. His remarkable performance earned him All-State honors in 2005, as well as the Sunset Region Offensive Player of the Year award.
Murray began his college football career at the University of Oklahoma, redshirting the 2006 NCAA season. He made his competitive debut on September 1, 2007, against the University of North Texas. In that game, he rushed for 87 yards and scored five touchdowns, becoming the first player in Oklahoma history to score four touchdowns in one half during a debut.
He also made Oklahoma football history by recording a 92-yard touchdown run, one of the longest in the program’s history. Throughout his college career, Murray developed a reputation for explosive running and versatility as a receiver out of the backfield.
DeMarco Murray was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft, with the 71st overall pick. He signed a four-year contract worth approximately $3 million, including a signing bonus of around $622,000. Initially the third-string running back, Murray got his breakout opportunity in Week 7 of the 2011 season when the Cowboys faced the St. Louis Rams. He rushed for 253 yards on 25 carries, breaking Emmitt Smith’s franchise single-game rushing record of 237 yards.
Murray’s best season came in 2014 when he led the NFL in rushing yards and was named the PFWA NFL Offensive Player of the Year. That season also earned him one of his two Pro Bowl selections. His powerful running style and productivity made him one of the league’s top backs at the time.
On March 12, 2015, Murray signed a five-year, $42 million contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. However, his tenure in Philadelphia was marred by inconsistency and a hamstring injury that caused him to miss Week 3 of the 2015 season. Though he showed flashes of brilliance, he never replicated his Dallas success with the Eagles.
Over the course of his NFL career, Murray accumulated 5,228 rushing yards, 49 rushing touchdowns, 307 receptions, and 2,165 receiving yards. He also scored six touchdowns through the air. His accolades include two Pro Bowl selections, NFL Rushing Leader in 2014, and the 2014 PFWA Offensive Player of the Year award.
DeMarco Murray and his longtime partner had a daughter, Savanna, born on June 20, 2013. The couple married on June 19, 2015. After retiring from football, Murray transitioned to sports broadcasting and later coaching, including serving as the running backs coach for the University of Oklahoma.
With a successful football career and a subsequent move into coaching and media, Murray has built a net worth estimated at around $5 million. His legacy endures as one of the standout running backs of the 2010s in the NFL.
