Donald Cerrone is a retired American mixed martial artist best known for his long-standing tenure in the UFC and for being one of the most active and entertaining fighters in the Lightweight Division.
Donald Anthony Cerrone was born on March 29, 1983, in Denver, Colorado. He attended Air Academy High School, where his athletic interests initially centered around professional bull riding. During his sophomore year, he transitioned to kickboxing, quickly excelling in the sport. Demonstrating natural talent and determination, Cerrone compiled an undefeated amateur kickboxing record of 13-0.
Training with elite fighters and coaches, Cerrone made his mark in mixed martial arts, rising through the ranks with a combination of technical skill and relentless fighting spirit. He made his UFC debut at UFC 126 in February 2011, defeating Paul Kelly via submission. Over the following year, Cerrone maintained impressive momentum, securing victories in his next three bouts through discipline and consistent training.
Although a tough match against Nate Diaz resulted in a loss, the bout earned the coveted "Fight of the Night" honor. Cerrone rebounded with consecutive victories before suffering another defeat, this time against Anthony Pettis in January 2013. In May of that year, he defeated KJ Noons at UFC 160, initiating a significant win streak.
Cerrone notched eight straight victories, culminating in a second-round TKO win over John Makdessi at UFC 187, delivered via a head kick that broke Makdessi’s jaw. This performance secured Cerrone’s position as the No. 1 contender in the Lightweight Division. His title shot came on December 19, 2015, in a rematch against Rafael dos Anjos. Despite a first-round loss, Cerrone proved his resilience and drive, closing out 2015 with a 3-1 record and beginning his transition to the Welterweight Division.
Throughout his career, Donald Cerrone garnered numerous accolades. ESPN named him Best Fighter of the Half-Year in 2015. At the World MMA Awards, he earned Breakthrough Fighter of the Year in 2011. Sports Illustrated honored him with the 2009 Fight of the Year award. Sherdog also recognized him with 2009’s Fight of the Year and 2008’s Round of the Year awards. Cerrone became one of UFC's most prolific fighters, holding records for most finishes and most post-fight bonuses during portions of his career.
One of his more talked-about defeats came in September 2019 against friend and fellow fighter Justin Gaethje at UFC Fight Night 158—a testament to Cerrone’s willingness to step into the Octagon against top-tier competition, regardless of personal relationships.
Outside the cage, Donald Cerrone is in a relationship with Lindsay Sheffield. The couple shares a son, and fatherhood has significantly influenced Cerrone's life. Due to the intensity of his training and competition schedule, balancing time with his family has posed challenges, making every moment with his son especially meaningful.
