Early Life and Family
Edmund Irvine Jr. was born on November 10, 1965, in Newtownards, County Down, Northern Ireland. He is the son of Edmund Sr. and Kathleen Irvine. Irvine grew up in the nearby town of Conlig and received his early education at Regent House Grammar School in Newtownards. He has an older sister, Sonia, who later supported him professionally as his physiotherapist up until 1999.
Irvine’s passion for motorsports was ignited during family trips to the British Grand Prix. His father, a recreational single-seater driver, also influenced his interest in racing. Growing up, Irvine admired fellow Northern Irish racing driver John Watson, who became an early role model for him.
Irvine began competing in motorsport in 1983. Initially interested in motorcycle racing, his parents considered it too dangerous. With encouragement from his father, he shifted his focus to Formula Ford. To help fund this pursuit, Irvine worked at his family's scrapyard without pay, receiving financial support in return to back his racing ambitions.
Eddie Irvine competed in Formula One from 1993 to 2002. He made his debut with Jordan Grand Prix and later joined Ferrari in 1996, where he rose to prominence. His most successful season came in 1999 when he drove for Scuderia Ferrari and finished as the runner-up in the Formula One World Drivers' Championship, narrowly losing to Mika Häkkinen.
