Halsey is a renowned American singer and songwriter, widely recognized for her debut EP, Room 93.
Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, professionally known as Halsey, was born on September 29, 1994, in Edison, New Jersey. She is the daughter of Nicole Frangipane, an emergency medical technician, and Chris Frangipane, who managed a car dealership. Halsey has two younger brothers, Dante and Sevian.
She developed an early interest in music and began studying classical instruments like the viola, violin, and cello. At the age of 14, she transitioned to playing the acoustic guitar. Halsey graduated from Warren Hills Regional High School in 2012 and briefly attended the Rhode Island School of Design. Financial challenges led her to transfer to a community college before eventually deciding to leave school to pursue music full time.
Halsey found solace and expression through music, using it as a personal outlet. She experimented with several stage names before settling on "Halsey," a rearrangement of her first name and a reference to a street in Brooklyn where she spent significant time.
In 2014, she began gaining public attention while touring and performing live. That same year, she released her debut EP, Room 93, which entered the Billboard 200 chart. Early in 2015, she co-headlined a tour with Young Rising Sons and in June joined Imagine Dragons as an opening act on their Smoke + Mirrors Tour across North America. Her growing popularity was further solidified with her debut studio album, Badlands, released in August 2015.
Halsey gained further recognition after featuring on Justin Bieber’s 2015 ballad “The Feeling,” featured on his album Purpose, which became a Top 40 hit. In 2016, she released the freestyle track “Tokyo Narita,” produced by Norwegian musician Lido. Although not a major commercial release, the song received attention from her fanbase.
Later that year, she collaborated with The Chainsmokers on the chart-topping single "Closer," which became both artists’ first number-one song on the Billboard Hot 100. The duet earned widespread acclaim and led to a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards.
In 2019, Halsey took the stage at the Emmy Awards to perform a moving rendition of "Time After Time." The performance was praised by both viewers and critics and sparked widespread discussion across social media.
Throughout her career, Halsey has been linked to several public figures, including Ashton Irwin of 5 Seconds of Summer, Jared Leto, Andrew Taggart of The Chainsmokers, and model-actor Ruby Rose. She was also in a widely publicized relationship with rapper G-Eazy from mid-2017 to 2018. Their on-again, off-again relationship attracted media attention, though the allegations of infidelity circulated in the press were never officially confirmed.
Halsey later dated English singer Dominic Harrison, known professionally as Yungblud. Their relationship was marked by creative collaboration and public appearances.
Open about her bisexuality, Halsey has been an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. She has shared her experiences of growing up in a conservative household and facing challenges due to her sexual identity, including temporary estrangement from her family.
