Harvey Keitel was born on May 13, 1939, in Brooklyn, New York City. He is the son of Miriam Klein, a homemaker, and Harry Keitel, a hat maker. Raised in a Jewish household, Keitel grew up in Brighton Beach and attended Abraham Lincoln High School.
Keitel began gaining recognition in the 1970s through his influential collaborations with director Martin Scorsese. He starred in Mean Streets (1973), one of Scorsese's earliest successes, and followed it up with a pivotal role in Taxi Driver (1976).
