Howie Kendrick was born on July 12, 1983, in Jacksonville, Florida. From a young age, he demonstrated a strong interest in athletics, particularly baseball. He attended West Nassau High School, where he was a member of the school's baseball team. Despite his passion and dedication to the sport, Kendrick remained relatively unnoticed during his high school years and did not gain national recognition at that time.
Following high school, Kendrick enrolled at St. Johns River Community College (now St. Johns River State College). He continued playing baseball at the collegiate level. Although he delivered solid performances, they initially went largely under the radar. However, in 2002, he caught the attention of scout Tom Kotchman, a former professional player and long-time MLB scout. Kotchman was impressed by Kendrick's power and potential, eventually recommending him to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, which proved to be a turning point in Kendrick’s career.
On Kotchman’s recommendation, Kendrick was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 10th round of the 2002 MLB Draft. He played in the minor leagues for several seasons, honing his offensive and defensive skills. In April 2006, he made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut with the Angels.
During his tenure with the Angels, Kendrick developed a reputation as a consistent and powerful hitter. He achieved a career highlight in 2011 when he was selected for the MLB All-Star Game. After eight successful seasons with the Angels, he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2015. Despite suffering a hamstring injury that limited his playtime during part of that season, Kendrick continued to be a valuable asset to the team.
In subsequent seasons, Kendrick went on to play for other MLB teams, including the Philadelphia Phillies and, most notably, the Washington Nationals. His performance with the Nationals during their 2019 World Series run was a career-defining moment, as he played a pivotal role, including hitting the go-ahead home run in Game 7 of the World Series. He officially retired from professional baseball in 2020.
Howie Kendrick has been married to his wife, Jody, since 2007. The couple shares a strong bond and are the proud parents of two sons, Owen and Tyson. Kendrick is known for maintaining a relatively private personal life, focusing on his family during his time away from the field.
Throughout his career, Kendrick amassed significant financial success, earning high-value contracts during his time in MLB. At the height of his career, his annual salary reached approximately $9.1 million. As of recent estimates, his net worth exceeds $22 million, a figure expected to grow due to past endorsements, investments, and potential future roles in the sport, whether in coaching, broadcasting, or other endeavors.
