January Jones was born on January 5, 1978, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Karen Cox, a store manager, and Marvin Jones, an exercise physiologist. She was named after the character January Wayne from Jacqueline Susann's novel Once Is Not Enough. She has two sisters, both of whose names also begin with the letter "J."
In 1979, her family moved to Hecla, South Dakota. Jones later returned to Sioux Falls and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1996.
Jones began her acting career with supporting roles in films such as Anger Management, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, and Love Actually. She gained broader recognition for her performance as Cadence Flaherty in American Wedding, the third installment in the American Pie series, where her character was pursued by both Steve Stifler and Paul Finch.
In 2005, she appeared in Tommy Lee Jones's The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, a project she has cited as one of the most creatively fulfilling experiences of her career. She went on to portray Carol Dawson, wife of football coach William "Red" Dawson, in the 2006 sports drama We Are Marshall. Jones also starred in Love's Enduring Promise, playing the eldest daughter of a pioneer family who falls in love with a mysterious stranger.
Her breakout television role came in 2007 as Betty Draper Francis in AMC’s Mad Men. Over the course of seven seasons, Jones brought depth and nuance to the role of the troubled suburban housewife, earning her critical acclaim and multiple award nominations.
Jones continued her film career with roles in high-profile projects. She portrayed Emma Frost in the 2011 superhero film X-Men: First Class, co-starring James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender. That same year, she appeared alongside Liam Neeson and Diane Kruger in Jaume Collet-Serra's thriller Unknown, as well as in Seeking Justice with Nicolas Cage and Guy Pearce.
On television, she took on the role of Melissa Chartres in Fox’s post-apocalyptic sitcom The Last Man on Earth, which aired from 2015 to 2018. In addition to her film and television work, she appeared in the British film The Boat That Rocked—released in North America as Pirate Radio—in 2009, further establishing her as a recognizable figure in international cinema.
During the late 1990s, Jones worked as a model for Abercrombie & Fitch, during which time she dated fellow model and actor Ashton Kutcher. From 2003 to 2006, she was in a relationship with singer Josh Groban. In 2011, she gave birth to a son named Xander, though she has chosen not to publicly disclose the identity of his father.
