Jason Calvin Garrett was born on March 28, 1966, in Abington, Pennsylvania, United States. He is one of the four sons of Jim Garrett and his wife, with siblings Jim Garrett III, John Garrett, and Judd Garrett. Jason attended the University School, a private preparatory school in Hunting Valley, Ohio, where he excelled as a three-sport athlete, lettering in football, basketball, and baseball. In football, he earned All-League honors playing as both a quarterback and safety. He graduated from the University School in 1984.
Garrett began his college education and football career at Princeton University. However, when his father took the role of head coach at Columbia University, Jason transferred there, along with his brothers. Columbia endured a challenging season under Jim Garrett, culminating in his resignation in 1985. Jason returned to Princeton and resumed his football career with the Tigers.
Over the 1987 and 1988 seasons, Garrett threw 366 completions on 550 attempts, achieving a completion rate of 66.5%. His performance helped him earn the prestigious Asa S. Bushnell Cup, awarded to the Ivy League Player of the Year. Despite a loss to former team Columbia in 1988, Garrett's collegiate career remained distinguished. He graduated from Princeton University in 1989 with a degree in History.
Garrett began his professional football journey in 1989 when he signed as an undrafted free agent with the New Orleans Saints. In 1991, he played for the San Antonio Riders in the World League of American Football. Although a shoulder injury in the season opener sidelined him for much of the season, he returned later but was eventually replaced in the lineup.
That same year, Garrett also had a brief stint in the Canadian Football League with the Ottawa Rough Riders. In 1993, he joined the Dallas Cowboys as a third-string quarterback. He was part of the roster during the Cowboys’ Super Bowl-winning seasons in 1993 and 1995. Over the course of his time with the team, Garrett appeared in 39 games, completing 165 of 294 passes.
One of his most memorable performances came on Thanksgiving Day in 1994, when he passed for 311 yards and 2 touchdowns, leading the Cowboys to a dramatic second-half comeback against the Green Bay Packers. ESPN later ranked the game as the fourth-best moment in Texas Stadium history. Garrett was promoted to the second-string quarterback role for the 1998 and 1999 seasons.
In 2000, he signed with the New York Giants, where he played until 2003. After short stays with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Miami Dolphins in 2004, Garrett retired from playing the game professionally.
Following his retirement as a player, Garrett transitioned into coaching. In 2005, he joined the Miami Dolphins as a quarterback coach. Two years later, in 2007, he was hired by the Dallas Cowboys as an offensive coordinator. His expertise and leadership earned him a contract reportedly worth $3 million for the 2008 season, making him one of the highest-paid assistant coaches at the time.
In November 2010, following the midseason departure of head coach Wade Phillips, Garrett was named the interim head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. He was confirmed as the permanent head coach in January 2011, a position he held through the 2019 season.
Jason Garrett is married to Brill Garrett. The couple resides in Dallas, Texas, where they maintain a low public profile while remaining active in various community and charitable efforts.
