Jay Inslee is an American politician, author, and lawyer, best known for serving as the governor of Washington.
Jay Robert Inslee was born on February 9, 1951, in Seattle, Washington. He was raised in the Seattle area, where his father worked as a high school teacher and his mother was employed as a clerk at Sears and Roebuck.
Inslee entered public service to advocate for the construction of a new public high school in his community. This local cause led to his election to the Washington State House of Representatives. In 1992, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for Washington's 4th Congressional District in Eastern Washington. After a brief electoral defeat and returning to western Washington, he was elected to represent the state’s 1st Congressional District in 1998, a seat he held until 2012.
In 2012, Jay Inslee was elected as the 23rd governor of Washington. He has since been re-elected for two additional terms, focusing heavily on climate policy, education, and healthcare reform during his tenure.
While in Congress, Inslee gained recognition as a climate leader. He supported significant investments in renewable energy and played a prominent role in drafting climate legislation. Notably, he voted against the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act in 1999 and opposed the Iraq War in 2003. He was also among the early proponents of net neutrality.
As governor, Inslee established the Clean Energy Fund, which has invested over $100 million in clean technology development and job creation. He also championed the Clean Energy Institute at the University of Washington, which conducts pioneering research into advanced renewable energy technologies, including solar power and battery storage solutions.
His administration passed one of the largest and most environmentally conscious transportation infrastructure investment packages in Washington state history.
In 2019, Jay Inslee launched a campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination with a platform focused on combating climate change. Though he did not remain a top-tier contender, his emphasis on environmental issues brought national visibility to his climate agenda.
That same year, a super PAC named Act Now On Climate, which supported his presidential run, disclosed raising approximately $2.2 million. A significant contribution came from Rose Letwin, an environmental philanthropist who donated $1 million shortly after Inslee declared his candidacy.
During the first Democratic debate in July 2019, Inslee attempted to separate himself from lower-polling candidates by directly challenging Joe Biden’s climate plan, arguing that it fell short of necessary action.
Jay Inslee married his high school sweetheart, Trudi. Together, they have raised three sons and are now proud grandparents to three grandchildren. Trudi has been an active partner throughout his political career, particularly on issues related to children and families.
