<p><a href="/biography/jay-inslee">Jay Robert Inslee</a> was born on February 9, 1951, in Seattle, Washington. He was raised in the Seattle area, where his father worked as a high school teacher and his mother was employed as a clerk at Sears and Roebuck.</p>

<h2>Political Career and Public Service</h2>

<p>Inslee entered public service to advocate for the construction of a new public high school in his community. This local cause led to his election to the Washington State House of Representatives. In 1992, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for Washington's 4th Congressional District in Eastern Washington. After a brief electoral defeat and returning to western Washington, he was elected to represent the state’s 1st Congressional District in 1998, a seat he held until 2012.</p>
