John Defterios is a seasoned financial and current affairs anchor with CNN. He currently serves as the network’s Editor of Emerging Markets. Known for his in-depth coverage and global perspective, Defterios hosts "Global Exchange," a program that focuses on BRIC economies—Brazil, Russia, India, and China—and emerging market trends.
John K. Defterios was born in 1961. He pursued higher education at the University of Southern California, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Journalism in 1984. He also completed studies in Political Science at the same university, laying the groundwork for his future career in international journalism and economic reporting.
In 2002, Defterios married Manuela Mirkos. Their wedding took place on Sifnos Island in Greece. At the time, Mirkos was associated with The New York Times. This was Defterios’s second marriage; his first ended in divorce prior to his union with Mirkos.
Defterios started his journalism career as an intern at CNN. He joined Reuters Television in 1984, where he served as a European correspondent until 1992. During his time at Reuters, he also produced content for "Nightly Business Report," a news program co-produced with PBS, focusing on financial news.
In 1992, he returned to CNN as a correspondent on "Lou Dobbs Moneyline" in New York. He later became the principal host for CNNfn and anchored several programs, including "World Business Today," "Business Unusual," and "Ahead of the Curve." In 2007, he began anchoring "Marketplace Middle East," examining economic trends and developments across the region. By 2011, he took on the role of host for "Global Exchange," further establishing himself as a prominent voice on emerging markets.
As Editor of Emerging Markets, Defterios has positioned himself as a leading commentator on economic and political trends in developing economies. His work often emphasizes the roles that BRIC countries and other growing regions play in shaping global financial systems.
He has conducted exclusive interviews with high-profile figures such as Jean-Claude Trichet, former President of the European Central Bank; former British Prime Minister Tony Blair; Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum of Dubai; and Bundesbank President Hans Tietmeyer.
Defterios also maintains a visible presence at international economic platforms. He serves as a media leader for the World Economic Forum and is a member of the Middle East Council of the Global Agenda. He has chaired sessions at the World Islamic Economic Forum and the Business Week Leadership Forum, contributing to dialogue on global development and financial strategies.
Throughout his career, Defterios has reported on several historic global events. These include the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Gulf War, and major economic summits such as the G8 and G20. His comprehensive reporting has provided global audiences with insights into the dynamics affecting both developed and emerging markets.
In 2011, scrutiny emerged surrounding FactBased Communications (FBC), a company where Defterios had served as President. The BBC and CNBC cancelled FBC-produced programs after revelations that the firm was concurrently engaged in public relations for the Malaysian government. An interview of Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak by Defterios on CNN drew criticism for its perceived bias. However, CNN clarified that Defterios had resigned from FBC earlier in 2011, prior to conducting the interview, and denied allegations of conflict of interest.
