Smith’s high school success set the stage for his collegiate career at the University of North Carolina under the guidance of coaching icon Dean Smith. During his time at UNC, Kenny earned second-team All-ACC honors as a sophomore and junior, and became a Consensus First-Team All-American in 1987. Smith began his professional basketball journey after being selected sixth overall in the 1987 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings. The Rockets went on to defeat the Orlando Magic 120-118.
