While at Vanderbilt University, Dickens had her first major stage appearance in the play Sexual Perversity in Chicago. She later moved to Los Angeles in the late 1990s to pursue her acting career in earnest. Her film debut came in 1995 with Palookaville, where she played the girlfriend of the lead character.
