Lu Han is a Chinese singer and actor, best known as a former member of the South Korean-Chinese boy band EXO and its sub-unit EXO-M. He departed from the group in October 2014 to begin a solo career in China.
Lu Han was born on April 20, 1990, in Haidian District, Beijing, China. He attended Beijing Shida Middle School before transferring to Beijing Haidian Foreign Language Shi Yan School. Later, he moved to South Korea as an exchange student and studied Applied Music at the Seoul Institute of the Arts.
In 2008, Lu Han auditioned for JYP Entertainment during a global audition held in China; however, he was not selected. Undeterred, he continued to pursue a career in entertainment. In 2010, while studying in Seoul, he was scouted by an SM Entertainment talent agent in the Myeong-dong shopping district. He was encouraged to audition and was eventually accepted as a trainee.
Lu Han debuted as a member of EXO and its Mandarin-language sub-group EXO-M in 2012 under SM Entertainment. He quickly gained popularity in both South Korea and China for his vocal abilities and stage presence. On October 10, 2014, Lu Han filed a lawsuit to terminate his contract with SM Entertainment, citing health issues and unfair treatment. His departure mirrored that of fellow EXO member Kris Wu, who had left the group a few months earlier.
That same year, Lu Han was ranked the sixth most popular entertainment star in China by China National Radio, reflecting his rising fame and strong fan base in his home country.
