Mario Lemieux is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player and the current co-owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Mario Lemieux played parts of 17 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL), spending his entire playing career with the Pittsburgh Penguins from 1984 to 2006. Widely recognized as one of the greatest players in hockey history, he combined extraordinary size, skill, and vision, earning numerous accolades and rewriting record books.
Over his career, Lemieux captured six NHL scoring titles and three Hart Memorial Trophies as the league’s Most Valuable Player. His on-ice dominance was matched by his resilience, particularly during the 1992–93 season, when he overcame a significant health challenge without compromising his performance.
In January 1993, Lemieux was in the midst of one of the most productive seasons of his career and on pace to challenge the NHL's single-season scoring record. However, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma and had to undergo radiation treatment. On March 2, 1993, the same day he completed his final treatment, he flew to Philadelphia and registered a goal and an assist against the Flyers.
Displaying remarkable perseverance and talent, Lemieux quickly returned to form, leading the Pittsburgh Penguins through a winning streak that secured the best regular season record in the NHL that year. His remarkable comeback not only solidified his legacy as a hockey legend but also served as an inspiring chapter in the sport’s history.
In 1999, Mario Lemieux transitioned from player to owner when he became the Penguins' principal owner, helping rescue the franchise from financial instability. He remains involved with the organization as a co-owner, contributing to its continued success both on and off the ice.
