Matt Ryan, born Matthew Thomas Ryan in 1985, is a professional American football quarterback. He is widely known by his nickname "Matty Ice." Ryan is the third of four children born to Michael and Bernice Ryan. Both of his parents are Roman Catholics of Irish descent. His uncle, John Loughery, also played quarterback for Boston College, establishing a family legacy in the sport.
Ryan attended William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he was a three-year starting quarterback. During his high school career, he received All-East honors from the Prep Football Report by Tom Lemming. As a senior, Ryan earned accolades including All-City First Team and Second-Team All-Southeastern Pennsylvania recognition for his performance.
Ryan enrolled at Boston College in 2003 and redshirted his freshman year. He made his collegiate debut that year in a game against the UMass Minutemen, completing two of three passes for 16 yards. He was named starting quarterback before the 2004 season after an injury sidelined Quinton Porter.
From 2005 to 2007, Ryan served as the starting quarterback, leading Boston College to three consecutive bowl victories. Across his college career, he compiled a 25–7 record in 32 starts and threw for over 200 yards in 15 games. He ranks third in school history for passing yards and completions. In 2005, he earned MVP honors in the MPC Computers Bowl.
In his senior season in 2007, Ryan led his team to the ACC Atlantic Division Championship and was named the ACC Player of the Year. In recognition of his collegiate accomplishments, Boston College retired his jersey in 2016.
Ryan was selected by the Atlanta Falcons as the third overall pick in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft. In his rookie year, he started all 16 games, guiding the Falcons to an 11–5 record and a playoff appearance. His performance earned him the 2008 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
In 2016, Ryan had a standout season, earning the NFL Most Valuable Player (MVP) title. He led the Falcons to Super Bowl LI, marking one of the franchise’s most successful seasons. Despite a strong effort, the Falcons ultimately fell to the New England Patriots in a historic overtime game.
Ryan's on-field success resulted in a lucrative career. At one point, he signed a five-year, $103 million contract with the Atlanta Falcons, featuring an average annual salary of approximately $20 million. By the age of 32, Ryan's estimated net worth had reached $85 million, largely attributed to his high salary, endorsements, and consistent performance as a top-tier quarterback.
While attending Boston College, Ryan met his future wife, Sarah Marshall. The couple married in 2011. Outside of football, Ryan is known to be private about his personal life but remains a visible figure in charitable and community initiatives. His performance has also made him popular in the realm of fantasy football, where fans regularly track his career statistics online.
