Minkah Fitzpatrick is an American football safety currently playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League (NFL). He initially rose to prominence when he was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
Minkah Fitzpatrick was born on November 17, 1996, in Old Bridge Township, New Jersey. Raised in a close-knit family, he attended St. Peter’s Preparatory School, a Catholic all-boys school in Jersey City, located approximately 35 miles from his hometown. A standout high school athlete, Fitzpatrick gained national attention for his performance on the football field. In April 2014, he committed to play college football at the University of Alabama under head coach Nick Saban.
At the University of Alabama, Minkah Fitzpatrick played for the Alabama Crimson Tide and quickly developed a reputation as a versatile and dynamic defensive player. Although originally recruited as a safety, his ability to play multiple positions in the secondary earned him widespread admiration.
In his freshman year, he appeared in 14 games, recording 45 total tackles, two sacks, 11 pass breakups, two interceptions, and one defensive touchdown. His impactful freshman performance earned him Freshman All-American and SEC All-Freshman honors. Fitzpatrick was instrumental in Alabama's successes, including winning national championships in 2015 and 2017. Throughout his college tenure, he was recognized as a consensus All-American and won the Jim Thorpe and Chuck Bednarik Awards in 2017, further solidifying his status as one of the nation's top defenders.
In January 2018, Fitzpatrick announced his decision to forgo his senior year and enter the NFL Draft. He was selected 11th overall in the first round by the Miami Dolphins. In his rookie season, he displayed flashes of excellence but ongoing disagreements with the coaching staff and the organization’s rebuilding direction led to friction.
In September 2019, the Dolphins granted Fitzpatrick permission to seek a trade. Several teams expressed interest, including the Dallas Cowboys. Ultimately, the Dolphins traded him to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for a first-round pick. The move proved pivotal for Fitzpatrick's career. With the Steelers, he has consistently performed at a high level, earning multiple Pro Bowl and All-Pro selections. Known for his football intelligence, range, and playmaking ability, he became a cornerstone of Pittsburgh's defense.
Fitzpatrick's continued success has made him one of the league’s premier safeties. In 2022, he signed a lucrative contract extension, making him one of the highest-paid safeties in the NFL. His estimated net worth reflects both his on-field success and endorsement earnings.
