Natascha Abigail Taylor, professionally known as Natascha McElhone, was born on December 14, 1969, in Surrey, England, to Noreen and Mike Taylor, both journalists. Raised alongside her brother Damon and two stepbrothers, Alexander and Nicholas, McElhone's early childhood was marked by her parents' separation when she was just two years old. She subsequently moved with her mother to Brighton. Her mother later remarried Roy Greenslade, a prominent newspaper columnist.
Choosing to adopt her mother's maiden name, McElhone, as her professional name, Natascha demonstrated a natural inclination for the arts from an early age. She began Iranian dance lessons at the age of six and continued them until she was twelve. She attended a boarding school in Brighton before pursuing formal acting training. In 1993, she graduated from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), where she further honed her skills in drama and performance.
McElhone launched her acting career in theatre, where she took part in numerous stage productions. Notable performances include her roles in Richard III and A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Open Air Theatre in Regent’s Park, as well as The Count of Monte Cristo and The Cherry Orchard at the Haymarket Theatre in Leicester. Her screen debut came in 1991, when she portrayed a character sharing her own name in the BBC television series Bergerac. In 1992, she also appeared in an episode of Absolutely Fabulous.
Her transition to film began in 1996 with a role in Surviving Picasso. In 1998, she gained critical acclaim for her performance in The Truman Show, alongside Jim Carrey. Her nuanced acting soon led to major roles opposite high-profile actors: Brad Pitt in The Devil’s Own (1997), Robert De Niro in Ronin (1998), and George Clooney in Solaris (2002).
McElhone also lent her voice talents to the video game Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, adding to her diverse portfolio. She later joined the cast of the Showtime television series Californication, playing Karen, a role that brought her sustained popularity. Known for her elegance, McElhone's wrist tattoo in the show attracted attention and became a fashion statement among fans. She also became a spokesperson for Neutrogena’s Ageless Essentials skincare line.
As of recent estimates, her net worth is approximately $5 million.
After several past relationships, McElhone married plastic surgeon Dr. Martin Hirigoyen Kelly in 1998. The couple had three sons and lived together in Fulham, London. Tragically, Dr. Kelly passed away from a heart condition on May 20, 2008, just one day before their 10th wedding anniversary.
In the wake of his unexpected death, McElhone and her children coped with their grief in part through writing. She later published a book in July 2010 titled After You: Letters of Love, to a Husband and Father, which consisted of heartfelt letters she and her children wrote to her late husband. The publication offered an intimate glimpse into her family’s journey through loss and healing.
