Ray Romano is an American actor and comedian best known for his role in the highly successful sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond.
Raymond Albert Romano was born on December 21, 1957, in Queens, New York. He attended elementary and middle school at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs in Forest Hills before moving on to Archbishop Molloy High School. He later transferred and graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1975.
His mother, Lucie Romano, was a piano teacher, and his father, Albert Romano, worked as a real estate agent. Ray has two brothers: Richard Romano, a former sergeant with the NYPD, and Robert Romano, a second-grade teacher in New York City.
Romano went on to attend Queens College in Flushing, New York, where he studied accounting. His career in comedy began when he was discovered during the Johnnie Walker Comedy Search, which helped launch his early work in stand-up comedy.
Ray Romano’s rise to fame came with his portrayal of Ray Barone in the CBS sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond, which aired from 1996 to 2005. The show was loosely based on his real life, and Romano’s comedic style helped make it one of the most beloved sitcoms on American television. His twin sons on the show were named Gregory and Matthew, the same names as his real-life twins, a nod to his personal life influencing the script.
Romano's success on the show earned him several Emmy Awards and established him as a household name in comedy and television. The program’s relatable humor and ensemble cast resonated with audiences across the country.
Before Everybody Loves Raymond, Romano appeared in stand-up comedy segments and had a recurring spot in the animated series Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist. He also competed on the TV talent show Star Search, gaining early exposure for his comedic talent. Though he was originally cast in the NBC sitcom NewsRadio, he was replaced before the show began airing, giving way to opportunities that eventually led to his breakout role on CBS.
Romano’s post-sitcom work includes significant roles in film and television. He voiced Manny the mammoth in the successful Ice Age animated film series. In 2019, he appeared in Martin Scorsese’s Netflix film The Irishman, playing the role of Bill Bufalino, further showcasing his versatility as an actor.
Ray Romano’s net worth is estimated to be over $200 million, largely due to the success of Everybody Loves Raymond and his continued work in both acting and stand-up comedy. He is consistently recognized as one of the most successful television comedians of his generation, having also worked as a writer and producer on various projects.
Ray Romano married Anna Scarpulla in 1987. The couple met while working together at a bank. Together, they have four children: a daughter, Alexandra, twin sons, Gregory and Matthew, and a younger son, Joseph.
In a 2012 interview, Romano publicly shared that Anna had been diagnosed with stage one breast cancer at the age of 48 after a routine medical check-up revealed an abnormality. She successfully underwent treatment, and the experience brought the couple even closer. The Romanos have maintained a strong marriage over several decades, with Ray often speaking fondly and humorously about family life in his stand-up routines.
