RJ Cyler is an American actor recognized for his versatile performances in both film and television. He is best known for his roles in "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl" and the 2017 reboot of "Power Rangers."
Ronald "RJ" Cyler II was born on March 21, 1995, in Jacksonville, Florida. He is the youngest of three children born to Ronald Cyler, a truck driver, and Katrina Cyler, a cook. Raised in a working-class household, RJ experienced financial hardships growing up but credits his family’s support and perseverance as instrumental in his journey.
In 2013, his parents made a significant decision to relocate from Florida to California. Selling many of their belongings, they moved west in hopes of supporting RJ’s aspirations in the entertainment industry. Shortly thereafter, Cyler booked his breakout role in the critically acclaimed independent film "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl."
Following the move, Cyler completed his high school education in California.
Cyler showed an early interest in entertaining. At the age of 12, he formed a dance group with his older brother, which marked the beginning of his performing journey. In 2012, he responded to a local commercial advertising open auditions in the Jacksonville area. His talent caught the attention of scouts, and he was invited to attend an acting camp in Los Angeles.
Impressed by his potential, RJ’s mentor encouraged the family to consider relocating permanently to California. This pivotal decision laid the foundation for Cyler's entrance into professional acting.
RJ Cyler gained national attention with his role as Earl in the 2015 Sundance Film Festival hit "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl." The film won both the U.S. Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award, helping to catapult Cyler's acting career.
In 2017, Cyler starred as Billy Cranston, the Blue Ranger, in the "Power Rangers" reboot. His portrayal was particularly praised for its depth and relatability, especially as the character was reimagined to be on the autism spectrum—a detail that earned positive attention for its representation.
Since then, Cyler has continued to take on diverse roles in both television and film, steadily building a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most promising young actors.
