George Ryan Ross III was born on August 30, 1986, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Raised in a middle-class family, Ross was introduced to music at an early age. He received his first guitar at the age of 12 as a Christmas gift, which sparked his interest in songwriting and performance. He began collaborating with his best friend, Spencer Smith, who had a drum kit. Together, they played covers of Blink-182 songs, with Ross contributing vocals.
During high school, Ross formed a band called Summer League alongside guitarist Trevor Howell and bassist Brent Wilson. Wilson eventually transferred to Palo Verde High School, where he met Brendon Urie in a guitar class. Impressed by Urie's playing, Wilson invited him to fill in for Howell during a performance. After Ross fell ill during a rehearsal and Urie stepped in as vocalist, the band recognized Urie's vocal talent and made him the lead singer. This collaboration led to the formation of Panic! At the Disco.
Ryan Ross served as the lead guitarist, backup vocalist, and primary songwriter for Panic! At the Disco. His lyrical and musical contributions were most prominent on the band’s debut album, A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out (2005), and especially on their second studio album, Pretty. Odd. (2008), which reflected a shift in musical style towards a more Beatlesque sound.
In 2009, Ross and bassist Jon Walker left Panic! At the Disco due to creative differences. Ross later explained that the departure stemmed from varying musical interests, with he and Walker wanting to explore a different artistic direction apart from bandmates Brendon Urie and Spencer Smith.
Following their exit from Panic! At the Disco, Ross and Walker formed The Young Veins. The group pursued a retro pop-rock style and released their debut album, Take a Vacation!, in 2010. While the band received moderate acclaim, it disbanded after a relatively brief run.
Ross also collaborated with other artists across various projects. He appeared in the music video for "Clothes Off!!" by Gym Class Heroes and featured in "One of THOSE Nights" by The Cab, alongside Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz and Patrick Stump. More recently, Ross released the track “The Bad List” with singer-songwriter Elizabeth “Z” Berg. He has shared additional solo work via his SoundCloud page, including a demo EP and unreleased music.
Ryan Ross is of American nationality and white ethnicity. He stands at five feet, eleven inches and has a slender build. Although he is not married and has no children, Ross has been in several public relationships. He dated fashion designer and activist Jac Vanek briefly in 2006, and later dated Keltie Knight—now a media personality and co-host of the LadyGang podcast—from 2006 to 2009. During his time with The Young Veins, Ross also dated musician Z Berg; although their romantic relationship ended, the two have remained close friends and collaborators. His most recent known relationship was with model Helena Vestergaard, which lasted from 2015 to 2016.
Ross was raised primarily by his father, George Ryan Ross II, after his parents’ divorce. His father struggled with alcoholism and passed away in 2006. Ross has spoken about the impact of his father’s illness, referencing the emotional toll in various interviews. The songs “Nails for Breakfast, Tacks for Snacks” and “Camisado” from Panic! At the Disco’s debut album are believed to be inspired by his father’s battle with addiction and hospitalization. The lyric “This is the scent of dead skin on the linoleum floor,” attributed to bassist Brent Wilson, reflects on that period.
Though he has stepped back from the public spotlight, Ross occasionally appears in creative projects. He was featured in a video on CrankThatFrank’s YouTube channel on September 27, 2019. He was also involved in live performances in 2019 and 2020, including touring with the "Dead End Kids Club," a collaborative project with Z Berg, Palm Springsteen, and musician Dan Keyes. Ross has stated intentions to release more music and continue collaborative performances in the future.
Ryan Ross remains known for his distinct songwriting style and the significant role he played in shaping Panic! At the Disco’s early sound. Although his net worth is not officially documented, estimates place it at around $1 million. Ross’s contributions continue to influence alternative rock and emo-pop music, and his dedicated fanbase follows his ongoing creative endeavors with interest.
