Solange is a distinguished R&B singer, songwriter, and artist, widely recognized both for her own contributions to music and fashion and as the younger sister of pop icon Beyoncé.
Solange Piaget Knowles was born on June 24, 1986, in Houston, Texas. She grew up in a musical household, with her older sister Beyoncé finding early fame as a member of the chart-topping girl group Destiny’s Child. Solange began her performance career at just 13 years old, joining Destiny’s Child as a backup dancer during their tours. Her professional singing debut came in 2001, when she appeared on the group’s holiday album, 8 Days of Christmas.
At age 17, Solange married Daniel Smith Jr. on February 27, 2004. Shortly after, the couple moved to Idaho, where Smith pursued his education. Later that year, they welcomed their son, Daniel Julez Smith Jr. Balancing early motherhood and a young marriage proved challenging, and the couple ultimately divorced in 2007. Despite the difficulties of marriage at a young age, Solange has frequently expressed that motherhood has been a meaningful and fulfilling part of her life.
Solange married music video director Alan Ferguson on November 16, 2014, in a ceremony held in New Orleans. The couple later separated in 2019, although they maintained mutual respect and privacy regarding their relationship.
Solange forged her own artistic path separate from her sister’s legacy. At 16, she signed with Music World Entertainment, the record label managed by her father, Mathew Knowles. That same year, she appeared on Lil' Romeo’s Game Time album and co-wrote the title track “Simply Deep” for former Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland.
Her debut album, Solo Star, was released in 2003 and showcased her emerging songwriting and vocal talents. She continued to write songs for prominent artists, including Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams.
In 2007, Solange signed a new record deal with Geffen Records and released her second studio album, Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams, in 2008. Featuring collaborations with producers like Mark Ronson, the Neptunes, and Cee Lo Green, the album marked a stylistic departure, blending Motown-inspired soul with contemporary R&B. While it received favorable reviews, commercial success remained modest.
Following this, Solange joined her brother-in-law Jay-Z’s label Roc Nation and released the True EP in 2012, a seven-track project co-written and produced with Dev Hynes. The EP garnered positive critical responses, particularly for its eclectic blend of soul, funk, and new wave elements.
In 2013, Solange parted ways with Roc Nation and founded her own music label, Saint Records. The venture was a pivotal moment in positioning her as a creative force in the independent music scene. Through Saint Records, Solange aimed to provide a platform for genre-defying artists of color and released the compilation album Saint Heron to spotlight emerging talent.
Beyond music, Solange has also worked as a fashion model and style influencer. She previously modeled for House of Deréon, the fashion line created by her mother, Tina Knowles. Her distinctive fashion sense has earned her recognition in the design world, where she continues to blur the lines between music, art, and fashion.
In November 2019, Solange took the stage at the Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival in Los Angeles, a music and arts festival curated by Tyler, The Creator. The event drew widespread media attention when headliner Drake, appearing as a surprise guest, was unexpectedly booed by attendees. Solange’s performance, however, was noted for its artistic staging and emotional depth, reinforcing her reputation as a boundary-pushing live performer.
