Tamzin Merchant was born on March 4, 1987, in Sussex, England. Although she spent part of her childhood in Dubai, she returned to the United Kingdom for her education. She attended Windlesham House School and Brighton College before enrolling at Homerton College, University of Cambridge.
Merchant made her screen debut in 2005 as Georgiana Darcy in the acclaimed film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, directed by Joe Wright, not Andrew Black. That same year, she appeared in the television film My Family and Other Animals as Margo Durrell.
In 2006, she expanded her portfolio with appearances in television films such as The Good Housekeeping Guide, portraying Sara Fox, and Casualty 1906, in which she played Probationer Eastwood. She also appeared in the music video for Jamie T's “If You Got the Money.”

She was initially cast as Daenerys Targaryen in the original unaired pilot of Game of Thrones, but was later replaced by Emilia Clarke before the series began production.
Merchant took on the leading role of Anne Hale in the supernatural drama series Salem, which aired from 2014 to 2017, further establishing her television career.
