Tim Green is a retired professional American football player, media personality, attorney, and best-selling author. He is widely recognized for his popular books, including The Big Game and Football Hero.
Timothy John Green was born on December 16, 1963, in Liverpool, New York. He attended Syracuse University, where he excelled as both a student and athlete. At Syracuse, Green was named an All-American football player and later received his degree in English. His exceptional performance on the field led to him being selected in the first round of the 1986 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons.
Green played as a defensive end and linebacker for the Atlanta Falcons for eight seasons. Known for his intelligence and athletic prowess, he served as a dependable and strategic player during his tenure in the NFL. While still active in football, he concurrently pursued a law degree and began writing, laying the foundation for his post-football career.
After retiring from professional football in 1994, Green published his first novel and soon thereafter became a practicing attorney. He gained widespread acclaim for his adult thrillers and later shifted his focus to books for young readers. Drawing on his experiences as an athlete and coach, he created sports-themed novels that emphasize character development, sportsmanship, and perseverance.
Since transitioning to writing for children, Green has authored more than a dozen novels for young readers and conducted over 1,200 school visits across the United States. Through these interactions, he has spoken to nearly half a million students, promoting literacy and the value of education. A passionate advocate for children's reading, Green uses his speaking fees to donate books to children, schools, and libraries lacking resources. His message—encouraging kids to prioritize education and meaningful relationships over fame and fortune—resonates deeply, especially given his journey from student-athlete to best-selling author.
In addition to his work as a writer and attorney, Green has been active in broadcasting. He served as an NFL commentator for FOX NFL Sunday and appeared on various television programs such as BattleBots, Good Morning America, Court TV, A Current Affair, and Find My Family. His diverse media presence expanded his influence beyond sports and literature.
In November 2018, Green publicly revealed that he had been diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), a progressive neurodegenerative disease. He has stated that he believes the condition may be linked to his football career, although the medical community continues to study such connections. Despite his diagnosis, Green remains active in advocacy and public service. He currently serves on the board of the Golisano Children's Hospital in Syracuse, New York, and also contributes to the National Writing Project, supporting writing and literacy development nationwide.
Tim Green lives with his wife, Illyssa, and their five children in Upstate New York. The family also has three dogs. Outside of his professional endeavors, Green enjoys a range of outdoor activities, including sailing, fishing, running, and swimming. He values time spent with family and embraces a lifestyle centered on balance and personal well-being.
