Unai Emery was born on November 3, 1971, in Hondarribia, Spain. He is a Spanish football manager and former player, currently serving as the head coach of Aston Villa in the English Premier League.
Emery grew up in Hondarribia, a coastal town in the Basque Country. Coming from a lineage deeply rooted in football, his father and grandfather both played as goalkeepers, while his uncle, Román, played as a midfielder. This footballing heritage laid a strong foundation for Emery’s future in the sport. He later trained with the youth academy of Real Sociedad.
Primarily deployed as a left midfielder, Emery had a modest playing career, spending the majority of his time in Spain's Segunda División. He made 215 league appearances over five seasons, scoring nine goals. At the age of 24, he featured in five La Liga matches for Real Sociedad, including a standout performance in an 8–1 win over Albacete Balompié in which he scored.
Emery spent much of his later playing days with clubs in the lower divisions. He concluded his playing career at Lorca Deportiva CF, retiring at the age of 32 following a season in Segunda División B.
After retiring in 2004 due to a knee injury, Emery was offered the head coaching position at Lorca Deportiva by the club’s president. His quick transition from player to manager proved highly successful. In his debut season, he led the team to promotion to Segunda División for the first time in club history. For his achievement, he was awarded the Miguel Muñoz Trophy, recognizing his outstanding managerial performance.
Emery’s tactical acumen and leadership helped Lorca finish fifth in their first season in the second tier, narrowly missing another promotion. His early coaching success marked the beginning of a promising managerial career.
Following his achievements at Lorca, Emery took charge of UD Almería in 2006. In just one season, he guided the club to its first-ever promotion to La Liga. Almería's overachievement during this period caught national attention and further elevated Emery’s reputation in Spanish football. He remained at Almería until 2008, solidifying his place as one of the most promising young managers in Spain.
In 2008, Emery became the head coach of Valencia CF. Despite financial difficulties and the sale of key players, he consistently guided the team to top-three finishes in La Liga. He maintained Champions League qualification for three consecutive seasons. However, due to disagreements with club management, Emery left Valencia in 2012.
In May 2012, Emery ventured abroad for the first time, accepting a two-year contract with Spartak Moscow. His tenure lasted just six months, ending in November 2012 after a 1–5 loss to Dynamo Moscow. Emery later acknowledged the challenges he faced in adapting to the cultural and tactical environment in Russia. He reflected on the experience as a lesson, using it as motivation to refine his coaching philosophy and approach.
Emery returned to Spain in 2013 to join Sevilla FC. Over three seasons, he led the team to three consecutive UEFA Europa League titles (2014, 2015, and 2016), a historic achievement that firmly established him as one of Europe’s top managers. His skillful transfer dealings, tactical discipline, and focus on squad cohesion contributed significantly to Sevilla’s continental success.
In 2016, Emery joined French powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). In his first season, he won the Coupe de France, Coupe de la Ligue, and Trophée des Champions. His second season was even more successful, as he guided PSG to a domestic quadruple—winning Ligue 1, Coupe de France, Coupe de la Ligue, and another Trophée des Champions. Despite these triumphs, PSG’s early exits in the UEFA Champions League led to criticism and his eventual departure in 2018 upon the expiration of his contract.
In May 2018, Emery was appointed as head coach of Arsenal FC, one of the elite clubs in English football. In his first season, he led the team to the UEFA Europa League final, where they were defeated by Chelsea. Although he initially introduced fresh tactical ideas, inconsistencies in performance led to his dismissal in November 2019. His managerial methods, focus on pressing, and detailed match preparation were significant aspects of his coaching philosophy throughout his tenure.
Unai Emery has been married to Luisa Fernández since 2005. The couple has a son, born in 2003, in Madrid. His estimated net worth stands at approximately $13 million, accumulated through his successful career as a player and manager across Europe.
