Jesse L. Martin, born Jesse Lamont Watkins on January 18, 1969, is an American actor and singer. Raised in Virginia, Martin later adopted his stepfather’s surname. His early interest in the performing arts led him to study theater at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, laying the foundation for a successful career on stage and screen.
Martin gained critical acclaim for his role as Tom Collins in the original Broadway production of Rent. His performance as the philosophical, HIV-positive computer genius showcased his dynamic presence and vocal talent. His Broadway debut, however, came earlier in a production of Timon of Athens.
