In 1967, major changes happened to the band. The name changed to Credence Clearwater Revival and John took Tom’s place as the lead singer. The following year saw high hopes for the band. The band released their debut self-titled album and embraced their first hit Susie Q. Other albums Proud Mary and Bayou Country came in the same year. Due to internal misunderstandings Tom left the band in 1971. The last album that came from the band was Mardi Gras released in April 1972. The only reunion they shared was at Tom’s wedding in 1980.

John now was destined to begin a solo career under the name The Blue Ridge Rangers. In 1973 John played covers of other country music hits such as Jambalava. He even released a single in late 1973 as The Blue Ridge Rangers. His albums after 1973 failed to reach out and captivate people. Sales were slim and he faced a lot of legal problems that delayed the follow-up. His period up to 1985 remained passive and he knew that his songs no longer held up to his high standards. Though he lost millions of dollars, he gained his peace of mind and now had the passion to excel. 1985 started with a bang when his first album for Warner Bros. Records, Centerfield went to the top of the charts. The album went through a lot of legal issues which forced John to change the lead character's name in ‘Zanz Kant Danz’- believed to be an attack on Saul Zantez, the head at Fantasy Records. His 1986 album Eye of the Zombie was less successful and could not make any positive impacts in his tours that followed.

Tom’s death in 1990 came as a shock to John as he mentioned that they both were not talking at time. His dark moments in life were when Tom took the record company’s side in their disputes and his death. A short trip to Mississippi returned the inspiration he was desperately searching for. After this he started performing his old Creedence materials regularly in concert. His 1997 album Blue Moon Swamp was much more successful than its predecessors and won the Grammy for the best rock album in 1997. John again decided to take a break and returned only in 2004 with is album Deja Vu All Over Again. Here, the 34 minute album included 10 songs. Three years later and after continuous tours, he completed his first new rock album Revival in 2007. Being heavily promoted, it appeared at number 14 on the US Billboard 200 chart and sold 65,000 copies in its first week. It was even nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. The 2008 Grammys saw John as a performer where he performed his very rare 1973 single ‘Coming Down the Road’ with Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard.

On August 2009, he released a sequel to his album The Blue Ridge Rangers, called The Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again. He was nominated for the 2010 Grammys for the Best Rock Solo Vocal Performance for his song ”Change in Weather” for his 2009 album. He began recording Wrote a Song For Everyone in 2011 and was released on May 28, 2013 marking his 68th birthday. It is a collection of classics and tracks he performed with other artists.

Fogerty married Martha Piaz in 1965. Before their divorce in 1970, they had three children together. He met Julie Kramer in 1986 and they married in Indiana on April 20, 1991. Having a daughter Lyndsav Lebiedzinski from her previous marriage, John and Julie had three children, two sons – Shane and Tyler and a daughter – Kesly. They live in Beverly Hills, California as of 2009.
