Megan Follows began her acting career at the age of nine when she appeared in a Bell Canada commercial. While she was originally directed to make a playful gesture—such as sticking out her tongue—she mistakenly made a more adult gesture, which became a memorable moment in her early career. She soon found steady work in Canadian television, appearing in series such as Matt and Jenny, The Baxters, and The Littlest Hobo, the latter of which featured her entire family in a two-part episode. In 1983, she starred in the short film Boys and Girls, which went on to win the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film.
Follows gained widespread fame for her portrayal of Anne Shirley in the critically acclaimed television adaptation of Anne of Green Gables. Her performance was widely praised and remains one of the most iconic interpretations of the character. The success of the series solidified her status as a beloved Canadian actress, leading to roles in other television and film projects such as Comedy Factory, Breakfast with Scot, and later works with the Hallmark Channel.
In 1985, she co-starred with Corey Haim and Gary Busey in Silver Bullet, a feature film adaptation of Stephen King's novella. Follows continued building her television portfolio and in 2004, she was part of the ensemble cast of the Hallmark Hall of Fame film Plainsong, alongside Rachel Griffiths, Aidan Quinn, and America Ferrera.
Her television work expanded in subsequent years. In 2009, she appeared in an episode of Brothers and Sisters. In 2011, she guest-starred on House, and in 2012, she played the role of Beth in the series Hollywood Heights. That same year, she joined the cast of Longmire in a recurring capacity as Alice Stewart.
