In 2008, Duffy was appointed to the Senate by then–Prime Minister Stephen Harper, representing Prince Edward Island. Initially a Conservative appointee, he later became an Independent senator. His role in the Senate marked a new phase in a long public career centered on political analysis and broadcast journalism.
During the 1990s, Duffy was often the subject of satire in Canadian publications such as Frank Magazine, including commentary on the perceived inappropriateness of his alleged pursuit of the Order of Canada. These critiques, while highlighting public scrutiny, did not prevent him from maintaining a prominent media presence during that time.
In recognition of his journalistic accomplishments, Duffy received the ACTRA Award in 1986 for his live coverage of the Turkish Embassy attack in Ottawa in 1985. In 1994, he was inducted into the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame, further affirming his contributions to Canadian broadcast journalism.
