Troy Roberts was born in 1962 in the Philadelphia area of Pennsylvania. He is an American national and currently resides in New York City. Roberts attended the University of California, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science in 1984.
Roberts began his journalism career in 1985 at KPIX-TV, a CBS affiliate based in San Francisco. There, he served as both host and producer of a weekly news magazine program until 1987. He then moved to KATU-TV in Portland, Oregon, where he worked as a reporter from 1987 to 1990.
In 1990, Roberts joined WCBS-TV, a CBS-owned station in New York, where he reported for the morning news program "Channel 2 This Morning." He became the local news segment anchor for the national broadcast "CBS Morning News" from 1995 to 1996. That same year, he was promoted to co-anchor of "Up to the Minute," CBS News' overnight news broadcast. During his time at CBS, Roberts conducted interviews with numerous prominent newsmakers and public figures.
Roberts also served as a correspondent for CBS News' coverage of the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. He reported on a range of major international and national events, including the inauguration of Nelson Mandela and the Middle East peace accords. In 1996, he covered the Summer Olympics in Atlanta and that same year reported on the U.S. presidential campaign between Bill Clinton and Bob Dole.
