Cynthia Ellen Nixon was born on April 9, 1966, in Manhattan, New York City. She is the only child of Walter Elmer Nixon Jr., a Texas-born radio journalist, and Anne Elizabeth Knoll, an actress originally from Chicago. Nixon is of English and German ancestry.

Her parents divorced when she was six years old. Nixon has spoken publicly about her upbringing, noting that her mother was the family's primary breadwinner due to her father's frequent unemployment. Anne Elizabeth worked behind the scenes on the game show To Tell the Truth, where she coached contestants posing as the featured guest.

At the age of nine, Nixon appeared on To Tell the Truth as one of the "imposters," pretending to be an amateur horseback riding champion.

Breakthrough with Sex and the City

Nixon gained widespread acclaim for her role as Miranda Hobbes in Sex and the City, which debuted on HBO in 1998. Her strong, witty, and career-focused character resonated with audiences, becoming one of the show’s most beloved figures.
