Jacob Zachar is best known for his portrayal of Rusty Cartwright, a classic nerd and engineering student at the fictional Cyprus-Rhodes University (CRU), in ABC Family's hit comedy-drama television series Greek. Rusty, a socially awkward but intellectually gifted student, joins the Kappa Tau Gamma fraternity to boost his confidence and become more socially adept like his sister. Zachar's performance was widely appreciated for its authenticity and charm.
Jacob Zachar was born on May 16, 1986, in Chicago, Illinois, U.S. He began his acting career with strong roots in theater, performing in local Chicago productions such as Big: The Musical, Guys and Dolls, On Golden Pond, and Les Misérables. Encouraged by supportive parents, Zachar was able to pursue his passion for acting from a young age without significant resistance at home.
Jacob attended St. Francis Borgia Grammar School and later graduated from St. Patrick High School, an all-boys Catholic institution in Chicago. During his school years, he was known for his involvement in a variety of extracurricular activities in addition to academics.
Jacob made his film debut in 2006, playing the role of Earnest, a local amateur circus performer, in the independent feature Little Big Top produced by Fly High Films. Following this, his biggest television breakthrough came with his role in Greek, which first aired the following year. His other screen credits include appearances in House, Detention of the Dead, Those Who Wander, The Hive, and providing additional voices in the animated film Surf's Up.
Outside of acting, Jacob is an accomplished musician, known locally in Chicago. He sings and plays the harmonica, and over the years he's been involved in several musical groups. Previously, he has performed with the metal band Megaband and the funk ensemble Super Fly TNT. In a January 2015 Twitter post, he announced plans to start a new metal band called Stainless Steel.
Jacob tends to keep his personal life private. While there have been rumors about him dating his Greek co-star Jessica Rose, who portrayed Ashleigh Howard on the show, there is no official confirmation from either party. In contrast to his character Rusty, Jacob has mentioned in interviews that he is more relaxed and grounded. He relates to Rusty’s values of integrity and respect but emphasizes that he approaches life with more ease and confidence.
Jacob stands at approximately 5 feet 9 inches with a lean and fit build. Those who have worked with him often describe him as high-spirited, approachable, and down-to-earth. Though he doesn't see himself as entirely similar to Rusty, he acknowledges some shared virtues including dedication and sincerity.
Even before stepping into the limelight, Jacob was widely regarded among his peers for his talents. He actively participated in sports and musical activities throughout his schooling and was also fond of skateboarding during his formative years.
Fans can connect with Jacob through his social media platforms. On Twitter, he goes by the handle @jacobzachar and had approximately 5,957 followers as of the latest record. His Twitter bio reads:
"...alright, no need to fight, cause everybody is different and there's nothing you can do about it..."
