Julia Roberts was born on October 28, 1967, in Smyrna, Georgia. Her father, Walter Roberts, was a Baptist, and her mother adhered to Roman Catholicism. She has two siblings: actor Eric Roberts and actress Lisa Roberts Gillan.
As a child, Roberts initially aspired to become a veterinarian. However, after graduating from Campbell High School in Smyrna, she moved to New York City to pursue a career in acting. There, she signed with the Click Modeling Agency and began taking acting classes to hone her skills.
Roberts made her film debut in 1988 with a supporting role in the movie Satisfaction. Later that same year, she landed her first major role in Mystic Pizza, which helped establish her as a rising talent in Hollywood. She gained further recognition in 1989 with her performance in Steel Magnolias, earning her an Academy Award nomination and her first Golden Globe Award.
Roberts became a global star with her lead role in Pretty Woman (1990), although this was absent in the original text. Her career includes numerous successful films such as Sleeping with the Enemy (1991), Hook (1991), The Pelican Brief (1993), Mary Reilly (1996), My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997), Conspiracy Theory (1997), Notting Hill (1999), and Runaway Bride (1999).
In 2004, Roberts starred in the ensemble drama Closer, directed by Mike Nichols, replacing Cate Blanchett. That same year, she reprised her role in the sequel Ocean's Twelve. Other notable films include Charlie Wilson’s War (2007), Valentine’s Day (2010), Eat Pray Love (2010), and Mirror Mirror (2012). Collectively, Roberts’s films have grossed over $2.6 billion worldwide, making her one of the most commercially successful actresses in Hollywood.
Roberts has also appeared on television, including a guest role in the second season of the popular sitcom Friends. She earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination during her career and was listed among the top 50 women in show business by industry publications in December 2000.
In addition to her acting, Roberts is a producer through her company Red Om Films, which she operates with her sister Lisa Roberts Gillan and Marisa Yeres Gill. Through Red Om, Roberts served as executive producer for several projects, including the first four films in the American Girl series.
Roberts has been romantically linked to several actors, including Jason Patric, Liam Neeson, Kiefer Sutherland, and Matthew Perry. She was briefly engaged to Sutherland, but they ended the engagement days before their planned wedding. On June 25, 1993, she married singer Lyle Lovett; however, the couple divorced in March 1995.
While filming The Mexican in 2000, Roberts met cinematographer Daniel Moder, who was then married to Vera Steimberg. After Moder's divorce, he and Roberts married on July 4, 2002. The couple has three children: twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, and a son named Henry.
Roberts was raised with Catholic beliefs but announced in 2010 that she practices Hinduism, a spiritual path inspired during the filming of Eat Pray Love. In 2009, while in India shooting the film, spiritual leader Swami Daram Dev bestowed traditional Hindu names upon her children.
An advocate for charitable causes, Roberts has donated time and resources to UNICEF and other humanitarian organizations throughout her career. Her philanthropic efforts reflect her commitment to global welfare and children’s rights.
