Mallika Kapur was born in Kolkata, India. She completed her undergraduate studies at Brown University in the United States, earning a Bachelor's degree in International Relations. Driven by an interest in media, she went on to pursue a Master’s degree in Broadcast Journalism at the Graduate School of Journalism in New York City. Kapur began her journalism career with an internship at The Statesman newspaper in Kolkata. She has a younger brother, Nikhil Kapur.
Following her internship in Kolkata, Kapur joined CNBC Asia at its Singapore bureau, where she worked for one and a half years. She also spent some time with the network in New York. In 2001, she began her career at CNN as an assistant producer. The following year, she was promoted to correspondent, focusing on business, markets, and current affairs reporting. Initially based in Europe, Kapur was later elevated to roles as both producer and reporter.
She spent eight years at CNN’s London bureau, covering a broad range of international news stories, before relocating to the network’s Mumbai office. While in London and Mumbai, Kapur worked on CNN's feature programs such as Eco Solutions and CNN Business Traveller, and contributed reporting to Eye on India. She has also produced live news content for shows including CNN Today, Business International, and World Business Today.
Kapur has reported extensively on significant national and international events. These have included the 2010 Commonwealth Games in India, President Barack Obama's visit to India, the unveiling of the new Indian rupee symbol, and the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks. Her financial journalism includes coverage of India’s market dynamics and contributions to the CNN special segment India Means Business.
In the field of environmental journalism, she has explored topics such as the advancement of electric vehicles, organic farming practices, and the use of solar energy in India’s rural areas.
