Mallika Kapur was born in Kolkata, India. She completed her undergraduate studies at Brown University in the United States, earning a Bachelor's degree in International Relations. Driven by an interest in media, she went on to pursue a Master’s degree in Broadcast Journalism at the Graduate School of Journalism in New York City. Kapur began her journalism career with an internship at The Statesman newspaper in Kolkata. She has a younger brother, Nikhil Kapur.
Following her internship in Kolkata, Kapur joined CNBC Asia at its Singapore bureau, where she worked for one and a half years. She also spent some time with the network in New York.
