Riyad Karim Mahrez was born on February 21, 1991, in Sarcelles, a northern suburb of Paris, France. He was raised in a family of Algerian heritage—his father originated from Algeria, and his mother is of Algerian descent. As a child, Mahrez frequently visited Algeria with his family, maintaining a close connection to his roots.
Mahrez began playing football at a young age and joined the local club AAS Sarcelles in 2004, when he was 13. He later advanced to play for Quimper, a club competing in the Championnat de France Amateur (CFA), where he made 22 appearances during the 2009 season.
Mahrez's professional breakthrough came when he joined Leicester City in 2014. Though initially unfamiliar to many English football fans, he quickly demonstrated his skill and technical ability. His impressive form became particularly evident during the 2015–16 season, in which he scored four goals in the opening four games, earning a nomination for the Premier League Player of the Month award.
That same season, Mahrez played a crucial role in Leicester City's historic Premier League title win, contributing significantly with goals and assists. His performances garnered widespread recognition, establishing him as one of the league’s top wingers.
In July 2018, Riyad Mahrez signed a five-year contract with Manchester City for a transfer fee reported to be around £60 million. At the time, this made him one of the most expensive African footballers in history. Since joining City, Mahrez has continued to be an impactful player, contributing to the club’s domestic and European successes, including multiple Premier League titles and appearances in UEFA Champions League fixtures.
Although born in France, Mahrez chose to represent Algeria at the international level. He made his debut for the Algerian national team in 2014. Mahrez was a key figure in Algeria’s triumph at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, providing leadership and attacking prowess throughout the tournament.
Riyad Mahrez married English citizen Rita Johal in 2015, and the couple has a daughter. He is a practicing Muslim and performed the Umrah pilgrimage to Mecca in June 2017. Mahrez's faith remains a significant aspect of his life, and he has spoken publicly about how it influences both his personal and professional decisions.
