Mike Brooks is an IN SESSION consultant and distinguished law enforcement analyst. Based in Atlanta, Georgia, he serves as a television news correspondent for CNN and provides consultancy services relating to law enforcement. Brooks is a retired police detective with 26 years of service in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department. Beyond media, Brooks served as a senior instructor in the Security Specialties Division at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Georgia. He also held a significant corporate security role at Delta Air Lines, where he managed programs dealing with workplace violence prevention and handling abusive passengers.
Throughout his law enforcement career, Brooks received extensive accolades, including a Proclamation for Heroism from the D.C. City Council in 1985 in recognition of his actions during a barricade situation involving gunfire. He has been honored with more than 170 commendations from citizens, prosecutors, and fellow officers, reflecting his commitment to public safety and professionalism.
In addition to his formal roles, Brooks served as an assistant volunteer fire chief and emergency medical technician (EMT) in Fairfax County, Virginia. His responsibilities included fire suppression, hazardous materials response, and heavy ice and swift water rescue operations.
His work with the FBI’s Evidence Response and Rapid Deployment Team took him to high-profile assignments such as the investigation of the Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia, the U.S. Embassy bombing in Kenya, the Centennial Olympic Park bombing, and the crash sites of Pan Am Flight 103 and TWA Flight 800.
In 2005, Brooks briefly left CNN following a contractual dispute. However, the network later reinstated him, acknowledging the error and resuming negotiations. His return reinforced his value as a seasoned professional in both security analysis and broadcast journalism.
