Sandi Toksvig is a British-Danish comedian, actor, writer, and producer, born on May 3, 1958, in Copenhagen, Denmark. She spent much of her childhood in various countries due to her father's work as a foreign correspondent. Her parents are Claus Toksvig, a Danish journalist and broadcaster, and Julie Anne Toksvig. She later moved to the United Kingdom, where she attended Tormead School, an independent girls' school in Guildford.
At the age of 18, Toksvig began her professional journey in the performing arts as a follow-spot operator for the musical Jesus Christ Superstar. She furthered her education at Girton College, Cambridge, where she studied law, archaeology, and anthropology. She graduated with a first-class degree and was honored with the Raemakers and Theresa Montefiore Awards for academic excellence.
Toksvig’s entertainment career took shape during her time at Cambridge, where she co-wrote and performed in the first all-female show at the prestigious Cambridge Footlights Dramatic Club. This milestone marked an early step in her contributions to gender equality in British comedy.
She made her television debut in the 1980s on the children’s show No. 73 and continued to appear in several television programs, including The Saturday Starship, Motormouth, Gilbert's Fridge, and The Sandwich Quiz. She was also a performer on the opening night of the Comedy Store in London, a key venue in the rise of alternative comedy in the UK.
Toksvig has become well known for her appearances on British television panel shows. Her credits include Call My Bluff, Whose Line Is It Anyway?, Mock the Week, QI, and Have I Got News for You. She is recognized for her quick wit, intellectual humor, and advocacy for social issues, making her a popular figure in British media.
Toksvig has three children—two daughters and a son—who were all carried by her former partner, Peta Stewart. The children were conceived via artificial insemination from donor Christopher Lloyd-Pack. Toksvig has always been open about her family life and is a prominent advocate for LGBTQ+ rights in the UK.
In 2013, she became a British citizen, adding to her Danish nationality.
