Scottie Maurice Pippen was born on September 25, 1965, in Hamburg, Arkansas. He was the youngest of 12 children born to Preston and Ethel Pippen. During his senior year at Hamburg High School, he led his basketball team to the state playoffs and earned all-conference honors. Despite his talent, Pippen did not receive a college scholarship. He enrolled at the University of Central Arkansas, an NAIA school, where he initially served as the team’s basketball equipment manager before earning a place on the roster. Pippen funded his own education while steadily rising through the ranks as a college player.
Pippen began his college career with modest statistics, averaging just 4.3 points per game (ppg). However, he developed rapidly over his collegiate years, finishing with an impressive average of 23.6 points and 10 rebounds per game. His athleticism and work ethic caught the attention of NBA scouts, significantly boosting his draft stock. In the 1987 NBA Draft, he was selected fifth overall by the Seattle SuperSonics, but was quickly traded to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for Olden Polynice— a move orchestrated by Bulls general manager Jerry Krause, who had targeted Pippen for his potential.
Pippen’s entry into the NBA marked the beginning of a transformative era for the Chicago Bulls. He teamed up with Michael Jordan to form one of the most successful duos in basketball history. Together, they led the Bulls to six NBA championships during the 1990s. One of the most memorable seasons was 1995–96, when the Bulls set a then-record of 72 regular-season wins. Pippen earned the nickname "Pip" and quickly established himself as one of the premier forwards of his time.
Although he went through a personal rough patch with his 1990 divorce from his first wife, Karen McCollum, his focus and performance on the court remained undeterred.
Pippen was known not only for his scoring ability but also for his exceptional defense and versatility. He was named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team eight times and selected as an NBA All-Star on seven occasions. His impact was crucial to the Bulls' dynasty, especially when Michael Jordan temporarily retired in 1993–1995. Pippen also played for the U.S. Men's Olympic Basketball Team—famously known as the "Dream Team"—in 1992, earning a gold medal. He won a second Olympic gold in 1996.
