Education and Early Carpentry Training

Oosterhouse attended Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools, where he was a dedicated student. He later enrolled at Central Michigan University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in nutrition and communication. Alongside his formal education, he developed an early passion for carpentry. At the age of 12, he began learning the trade from a neighbor who was a professional carpenter, setting the foundation for his future career in home improvement and design.

Start of Career in Carpentry and Television

Oosterhouse began working in carpentry while still pursuing his university studies, often assisting his neighbor. Encouraged by his two older brothers, Todd and Tyler, who were also carpenters, he honed his skills and pursued hands-on experience. After graduating from college, he moved to Los Angeles to seek opportunities in the film and television industry. His first break came with a job on HBO’s Project Greenlight, where he worked as a production assistant and tape coordinator.

Television Breakthrough: "Trading Spaces"

In 2003, Oosterhouse auditioned for the TLC series Trading Spaces and joined the show in its fourth season. His performance and charisma quickly earned him recognition. He later participated in the show’s spin-offs, Trading Spaces: Family and Trading Spaces: Boys vs. Girls, which gave him the opportunity to work with children and expand his television presence.

In 2004, Oosterhouse appeared on an episode of CBS Sunday Morning in New York. He contributed to a segment in which he and commentator Andy Rooney renovated journalist Bill Geist’s office, showcasing his creativity and practical skills. The following year, he joined NBC’s Three Wishes, a show hosted by Amy Grant, where they traveled to towns across the U.S. to help fulfill the wishes of deserving individuals, further elevating his profile.
