Chris Broussard spent much of his childhood in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he attended St. Luke Catholic Grade School, a private religious school. During his teenage years, his family moved to Parma Heights, Ohio, where he attended Holy Name High School, another private religious institution.
Chris pursued higher education at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. Oberlin is historically recognized as the first college in the United States to admit both female and African American students. He graduated in 1990 with a bachelor's degree in English and was also a member of the college’s basketball team during his time there.
Shortly after graduating in 1990, Broussard began his journalism career with The Plain Dealer, a prominent Cleveland newspaper. He worked there for approximately four years before moving on to the Akron Beacon Journal, another Ohio-based publication. At the Beacon Journal, he covered the NBA for nearly three seasons and became the beat writer for the Cleveland Cavaliers during that time.
In 1998, Broussard relocated to New York City to join The New York Times as a sports journalist. Over the next several years, he provided coverage for a variety of NBA teams. He followed the New Jersey Nets for two years, the New York Knicks for three years, and spent an additional year focused on general NBA coverage.
